I taught my graduate class this afternoon, since we did not meet Tuesday due to the holiday. Interestingly, my students asked me if they could meet today to make up for the holiday. I was pleasantly stunned; I've never had students volunteer to meet on another day to make up for a regularly scheduled holiday. I am going to be spoiled when I get back to the U.S.
Our topic today was families and deafness. We discussed early intervention, the Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP), parental involvement, family-centered services in the home, and parents as teachers. These activities and concepts are not generally known or practiced in Ukraine, and the students seemed genuinely interested and intrigued by these ideas. In fact, there was considerable head nodding as we talked, so they seem to espouse the ideas, but putting them into practice here is a significant challenge.
I would really like to see homebased family centered services for children with disabilities implemented in Ukraine. That's an exciting idea. Where to start? I have so many ideas and projects in my head.
